A unique expression of Japanese tea, Hojicha is loved for its rich, roasted character and warm, toasty aroma. Originating in Kyoto’s Uji region in the 1920s, Hojicha was created when tea producers began roasting mature tea leaves and stems to bring out new flavors and extend shelf life.

This innovative roasting process, done at approximately 200°C, gives Hojicha its signature reddish-brown color and smooth, slightly sweet flavor with nutty and caramel-like undertones. Unlike traditional Japanese green teas, which are often more vegetal in flavor, Hojicha offers a gentle complexity with minimal bitterness and lower caffeine levels, making it ideal for evening enjoyment.

To savor the full, comforting flavors of our Hojicha, follow these steps:

Prepare the Leaves: Measure 2 teaspoons (4 grams) of Hojicha tea leaves and place them into a small, Japanese-style teapot (kyusu) for optimal extraction.

Heat the Water: Use 150 ml of water heated to 90-100°C. This temperature brings out the rich, roasted depth and caramel warmth of Hojicha.

Pour and Steep: Pour the hot water over the tea leaves in the kyusu, ensuring full coverage. Let it steep for 30 seconds to capture the smooth, earthy notes. For a bolder flavor, you can steep the tea a bit longer, depending on your taste preference.
